By The Grace of God...

(I don't know why part of this post is underlined. I can't figure out how I did it or how to undo it - so please bear with me!)

Pffffffffffffff. Tap*Tap Pffffffffffffff.

Is this thing on?

Good Day, Ladies and Gentle
men! Welcome to my Groovy blog!

I guess I can extend that welcome to myself as well, since I haven't been here in so long.

Much has happened in the past few months. Since I do plan to begin writing regularly again, I shall give you a brief overview in photos and exclamation marks.

Hmmm, now where should I start?

OK...first of all, God has given me so many hugs lately that I am overwhelmed with thankfulness. I don't know why He is so good to me, but I do know that He is worthy of all my praise - in good times (like now) and in bad. He is my rock and my King forever! Lately, He has graciously chosen to bless me with several desires of my heart.

First, and most importantly, Funsocksgirl ca
lled us with some very exciting news. She and J-Man are expecting a baby! Our first grandchild from them! (I have 3 other grandchildren that are my son's precious kiddos)

See, here's the proof!

Naturally we are VERY excited!!!!!!

Secondly, those of you who have been faithfully reading my blog for many millennia know that I love dairy goats. The girls and I have been involved with dairy goats in 4-H for 6 years now - other people's dairy goats. I have wanted my own for a very long time, but The Best Hubby Ever was opposed. Farm animals take too much time, cost too much, are too much trouble, yadda, yadda, yadda.

But over the past few years, as our passion has continued and as I've gained experience as a farm sitter and as the BHE has fallen in love with goat milk cheese, God has been slowly changing his heart. The final result being that we now have a small barn and pen and TWO goats of our very own!

Here's the new barn and pen that the BHE and our dear friend Pastor Jon built together.
And this is Miss Mindy with Silly-Head and Girly-Girl. Mindy is an older Nubian. She is supposed to be pregnant, but, unlike Funsocksgirl, she does not seem to be showing any signs thereof. We are leasing her for the summer. In exchange, we were supposed to get to keep her kids. But sadly, there are no kids.
So for a few days, she was here all alone and oh so stressed! Goats are herd animals and do NOT like being alone. She called and called and called and wouldn't eat. It was so sad! Fortunately, my friend EarlyBird has a goat farm. She said she lease us a companion for Mindy. See her in the back of the pen?

Her name is Annika (We call her Annie). She's a miniature dairy goat - a Nigerian. They didn't like each other much at first, but now they get along fine. We have the option to buy Annie in the fall after she has been bred. That way we can have her and some kids and finally get some goat milk.

By the way - and this is very hush-hush - so don't tell anyone: The BHE is totally smitten with this little goat. He-who-hates-animals LOVES her! He even likes our Mindy who is not pregnant and will not give us milk!

Isn't God good?

Here they are together. The picture is a little blurry, but I wanted you to see the size difference. They are both full grown.

And thirdly, I finally did it. I rode my bicycle 180 miles in the Trek Across Maine to raise money for the American Lung Association. I've been TRYING to do this for 5 years now.

Year 1: I tried to ride, but I hadn't trained adequately. I was absolutely miserable and totally exhausted. I quit after Day 2 and ended up working as a volunteer instead.

Year 2: I jumped into training too quickly and strained my achilles tendon. I couldn't train for over a month, so I decided to volunteer for the whole weekend instead while the BHE rode.

Year 3: I did a super job a training and was in GREAT shape for the Trek. However, 2 weeks before the Trek I noticed some discomfort in my left leg after a lengthy ride. It went away and I thought all was well. On Day 1 I rode. It was pouring and many folks were hypothermic, but I love riding in cool weather. I was so excited at how easy it all seemed. Sadly, in the last 20 miles of the ride, the leg pain returned and got worse and worse and worse. By the time crossed the finish line it hurt so bad I had trouble walking and stairs were murder. We had a dorm room on the third floor... I took a boatload of ibuprofen and iced my leg and hoped for the best.

I only made it 12 miles on Day 2. By then I was in so much pain I had to flag a medic. A SAG van took me to the finish. I volunteered for the rest of the Trek. I was depressed for weeks after the Trek. I felt like such a failure!

It gets very disheartening to see folks who are grossly overweight or who never train who ride the whole stupid event like it's nothing. I kick my butt trying to be ready and just can't do it. I was in a depressed funk for weeks and weeks.

Year 4 (Last Year): I had a severe allergic reaction in March and ended up on prednisone. Prednisone completely wastes me, so training was out of the question for well over a month. I didn't even try to ride. The BHE rode and I volunteered. Again.

Year 5 (THIS year): I started training in the middle of winter by running on the treadmill and lifting weights. I increased my distance and speed little by little in an effort to avoid injuries. I started riding when there was still snow on the ground. Unfortunately, we had alot of rain. So I tried to fill in the gaps with walking, running, and weight lifting. When I did finally get to ride, I felt great aerobically, so I increased my riding distance too quickly and, guess what? I started feeling that leg pain again.

I immediately backed off and did some research. The Lord led me to a fabulous website that helped me figure out that pain was patellar tendonitis. The website also gave me some wonderful info on how to treat it myself and how to alter my riding style to prevent it.

I was just starting to get a handle on the tendonitis when I had a bad reaction to the sun. Which meant that now I could not ride in sunny weather. Which we now had alot of. Yee-haw. I was able to treat it with a prescription steroid cream instead of prednisone, but now I was becoming seriously concerned about the weather during the event. I knew I could cover pretty much all of me except my face and neck. Sunblock helps, but does not provide complete protection. After much MORE research I found the answer: Take mega doses of beta carotene and buy a UV Buff. I ordered one from the UK and it didn't get here until 2 days before the Trek!

AND my period was due JUST before the Trek. I am perimenopausal and my periods are ugly affairs that make me pretty much worthless for a couple of days a month. I literally cannot exercise during those couple of days...

Needless to say, I was on an emotional roller coaster. Could I actually do it this year or was I going to "fail" again. One minute I'd cry and want to throw in the towel and the next minute I'd have a calm assurance that God really was making a way for me. After all, I was already in great physical condition. He had helped me find the info I needed to work on the tendonitis. He had helped me find the Buff and the info on beta carotene. He actually put me in a position of forced rest from biking (hello! Sunny Days!) so my tendon could heal. He worked in my body so that my period started a full week early. He helped me raise over $1,000 so I could be in the "Winner's Circle". Many, MANY people prayed for me. And He gave me a Scripture - Psalm 20:
1 May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob set you securely on high! 2 May He send you help from the sanctuary And support you from Zion! 3 May He remember all your meal offerings And find your burnt offering acceptable! 4 May He grant you your heart’s desire And fulfill all your counsel! 5 We will sing for joy over your victory, And in the name of our God we will set up our banners. May the LORD fulfill all your petitions
6
Now I know that the LORD saves His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven With the saving strength of His right hand.
7
Some boast in chariots and some in horses,

But we will boast in the name of the LORD, our God.
8 They have bowed down and fallen,
But we have risen and stood upright.
9Save, O LORD;
May the King answer us in the day we call.

Wow...It still makes me cry to read this. I truly felt He was speaking to me and yet I felt guilty and unworthy. There are people going through cancer and earthquakes and floods and tornadoes and dead loved ones. Why should He care about my insignificant desire to ride a bicycle.

And yet, He did. Not only did I ride the whole Trek, but I never had any trouble at all with my leg. My hands never went numb. My feet never hurt. I had one minor reaction to the sun and one application of the cream stopped it completely. My muscles did get tired, but they never got sore. Even today, after riding 180 miles over some incredible hills, I feel terrific! In fact, if I wasn't just a tad saddle sore (some chaffing, you know!) I'd be thrilled to ride a few more miles.

God. Is. So. GOOD!!!!!

The Trek went right past our house on Day 2. See what the girlies made for us? Take special notice of the balloon bicycle. Silly-head is getting quite talented with her balloon work!

And here I am. At the FINISH. With my MEDAL.
Because, by the grace and goodness of God, I DID IT!!!!!!!!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In Memory...

Scout lost two buddies in Iraq this past February. As you gather 'round the grill this weekend, remember those who have sacrificed their lives and/or health for your freedom:

Bleh

Still itchy, though the hives are fading.

Prednisone is wonderful/awful - helps the itching and rash, but makes my face swell and thickens my tongue so it's hard to talk. Laid me out with exhaustion on Thursday, made me hyper yesterday, laid me out again today. Of course, I had a party today. Fun party, too - I think. I'm not sure who came or what they did, but they were all very nice people - I think. I assume from this pile of order sheets on my desk that some of them bought Pampered Chef products. That's a good thing - I think.

More reasons I am thankful for the itchy rash from hell:

1. I am not pregnant or nursing. Now THAT would be awful right now!

2. I got a full body peel without having to pay any spa fees.

3. I haven't been able to had to shave or wear, um, support for a week and a half now.

4. My breathing is not affected by all the swelling.

5. I wasn't scheduled to sing at church the past 2 weeks.

6. No one objects to me sleeping in.

Until next time, this is Groovy - I think.

The Top Ten Reasons Groovy is Thankful for the Itchy Hive Attack

10. I did have a bad reaction, but I did NOT go into anaphylactic shock!

9. I got to read all the Agatha Christie mysteries I wanted. I just love Miss Marple. *sigh*

8. By God's gracious providence, I can afford all the lotions, potions, and meds I am using.

7. My hubby felt sorry for me and bought me chocolate.

6. I have infintely more empathy for friends with chronic skin conditions!

5. I can appreciate God's humor in allowing this to happen to me almost immediately after I started a study unit on "Patience" with the girlies.

4. I've been reminded how many people love me and care for me - including my very sweet and thoughtful daughters.

3. GrammaJ has been genuinely comforting instead of lecturing me. (She HAS been in anaphylactic shock; more than once!)

2. I got out of a week's worth of housework. :-D

1. IT'S ALMOST OVER!!!!!!!!!!!

24 December 2008

Overflow...

Hurting, people are hurting
Hearts broken, bodies wracked with pain
Battered, shamed, frantic
I am not one of these…

I wonder at my life of ease
Enough to eat - too much really
More clothes than I could ever wear
Heat, electricity, clean water, safety
All at my beck and call

Why am I so blessed?
Why am I so loved?

I see fighting and anger
Bitterness and pain
Families broken by sin and self

I am surrounded by love
Encompassed by grace
Astounded by mercy

Why am I so blessed?
Why am I so loved?

O Lord, You are so good to me!
I don't deserve this outpouring of blessing
It is only Your grace that makes my life so golden

Help me!
Help me, O my God
To feel, to care, to know
The pain of others
To feel their loneliness
To love them with Your love
To touch them with Your grace
To bless them with Your mercy

So they too can know that God is good
So they can know that God is love
So they can know that God is real
and You can be their peace

Merry Christmas to you all!

Monday's Munchies

Ha! You thought I was going to post recipes, didn't you?

Fooled ya!

Actually, I just REALLY need to focus on all the ways that God has blessed me so that I don't lose my mind right now. So maybe you'll join me in chewing on some of the GOOD things in my life right now.

But first, the ever entertaining LICE REPORT with your hostess, Groovy-old-itchy-and-paranoid-lady (it's an old, but honored Indian Native American name):

Groovy and Silly-Head are making progress in the war against bugdom. Groovy is almost completely nit-free and Silly-Head's ugly count is diminishing daily.

UNfortunately, the Groovies just discovered two big ugly live lice on Girly-Girl last night. Late. So we treated her head and nit combed. Still only two critters and no nits, so hopefully it was caught before the beasts were able to carry out their nefarious schemes on her pretty little head.

Then Mulletman of the VERY long, VERY Thick and VERY curly (as in beautiful ringlets) hair got a wee bit nervous, so Groovy checked his head. He has excema, so it was hard to tell if he had nits, or if he had dandruff. He decided to use the lice treament "just in case". Groovy combed three nits out of his hair and then ran for the scissors. Mm just got a substantial haircut! It was down to the middle of his back, but now it is shoulder length. Groovy was tempted to shave it all off, but she has seen Mulletman's head before, years ago, when he joined the Air Force. It was not a pretty sight!

Mm's head was finally declared "done" around 10 pm last night.

And so, field trip plans for the day have been cancelled so the Groovies can vacuum and wash and nit-pick all day.

In the Little House on the Prarie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Ma had a little saying that she used whenever tragedy struck; "There is no great loss without some small gain." That saying has made a tremendous impact on me.

Accordingly, here are some of the blessing that God has been bringing to my mind:

1. All the stress (lice wars, mom's move, Scout's "issues") have given me a real jump start on weight loss. Even though I joke about turning to chocolate, my stomach has been, in truth, too upset to eat much at all.

2. I have not been constipated. (Stop laughing. If you had crazy, lazy bowels like mine, you'd count that a blessing too!)

3. My house is REALLY clean!

4. We get to share so much quality family time together while we're picking nits.

5. None of us have cancer, MS, heart disease, rickets, bird flu, diabetes, zits, or brain injuries.

6. God still loves me and is in control, even when I feel like things are out of control.

7. I still have my voice and can sing His praises.

8. It's raining this morning so they'll probably cancel the field trip anyway.

9. My girlies are VERY cooperative and helpful and sweet and adorable and wonderful and (sniff) I love them!

10. Mulletman has been terrific - and he has NOT been in a funk (trust me, that's a blessing and a half!)

11. Funsocksgirl is a treasure to me - my bestest friend in the whole world.

12. We found a nice apartment for my mom!

13. Mm doesn't give a hoot about all the ticket changing and money wasted. (See #10)

14. My blogging buddies keep making me laugh and occasionally tear up with their alternating "Eeeeew Gross!" and their sweet words of comfort and consolation.

15. None of this insanity has caused me to lose my internet connection.

16. I have great ideas for a Squidoo lens on Lice!

17. If they have to commit me to a nuthouse, it'll be fine, 'cause I like nuts.

18. I'm saving money on coffee because my mind is already on overdrive all the time.

19. Mm already has a prescription for Xanax, so we didn't have to see a doctor to get some.

20. We have heat and hot water and electricity and all manner of wonderful, much appreciated modern conveniences.

21. By God's grace, we can financially afford to deal with all the stuff we're dealing with.

(Look out, folks. Groovy is on a roll!)

22. The flowers Mm gave me are really pretty and cheerful! (I'd give you a photo here, but the camera is refusing to flash, which is another stressful issue that I'm not going to bring up right now because it might totally derail this whole thankful frame of mind...)

23. Tim Horton's just opened in town. Whee-Haw!!!!

24. My sneakers are amazingly comfortable.

25. I have my OWN washer and dryer and do not have to go to a stinking laundromat!

26. I bought this awesome laundry soap. It costs $19.25 a gallon - Wait, did you faint? I'll get the smelling salts! All better now? OK - Anyway, you only need to use an 1/8 of a cup and it genuinely gets our clothes clean. That means it only costs me 14¢ a load.

27. My keyboard is all happy and clean - no stains, no crumbs, no dust!

28. I have an answering machine, so I don't have to talk to anybody today unless I really want to!

29. The colors in the trees outside are spectacular right now!

30. On non-rainy mornings I get 10 minutes of the absolute coolest rainbows all over my kitchen. This only happens for a few weeks in fall and a few weeks in spring when the angle of the sun is just right for hitting the prism hanging in my window.

31. Both our cars are running.

32. My plane ticket is for Portland instead of Boston, so we won't have a 3 hour drive to get there.

33. There will be Krispy Kremes in South Carolina!

34. Mom and I should be able to eat at at least one Cracker Barrel on the drive north.

35. I won a romance book for FREE from Marianne!

36. I got a sweet award from Michelle. See????

I laughed right out loud when I saw the award because, folks, it's confession time...I hate Christmas. I hate the Santa, I hate all the fuss and stress and trappings and excess sweets and obligations (and my husband's anti-obligation stance), and singing carols at church instead of worship music (our Pastor is weird that way!) and all that trying to figure out what to get for who and...ugh!

In fact, my favorite holiday in the whole wide world is the week AFTER Christmas!

The only 2 things I truly enjoy about the holiday are watching the girlies open their gifts and having a valid excuse for viewing "It's a Wonderful Life" and "White Christmas".

Nonetheless, this precious award - which I truly appreciate receiving - is for people who talk about and show the spirit of Christmas in their blogs.

What is the Spirit of Christmas you ask?

Quite simply it is those that have a generous and giving nature. Those who care about others. Those who have a kind word to say or a broad shoulder to lean on in the times that others need that. Those who display the "Spirit of Christmas".....Those that have touched your heart with their kind and giving and caring nature.

I am truly humbled that Michelle feels that I fit this mold. Thank you Michelle!

And now, duty and obligation require that I pass this award on to 5 other deserving souls. Hmmmm. Whom shall they be?

Well the first one that comes to mind is Pea. Pea is the CONSUMMATE celebrater of holidays and I know I can count on her to keep me smiling when my scrooginess is trying to take over.

Then, it would have to go to notcon4med who has literally given me the shirt off her back (twice!) and who loves to serve God by serving others. Hmmm, but wait a minute. The award is supposed to be for her BLOG...OK, I'll have to disqualify her because she doesn't write often enough, but her LIFE definitely qualifies!

However, I CAN chooseJessieU, who, not coincidentally, is Notcon4med's daughter! Jessie has such a tender heart for ministering to the needs of others. Her blog clearly shows this and is always a joy to read!

Marianne gets the award because SHE GAVE ME A FREE BOOK! Besides that, she always has intriguing quotes on her site AND she's taught me volumes about fiction writing and publishing and the lifecycle of a butterfly.

I can't pass over Grandma Dawn. She has been such a support and blessing to me through some difficult moments. I 'm getting kinda teary just thinking about it! She's kinda like my internet Mommy (though she's young enough to be my sister!). I love you Dawn!

Lastly, I'd have to pick BooMama because she ALWAYS makes me laugh and she keeps me abreast of all the latest fashion developments so that I never need go to the grocery store looking like frumpy Jesus Freak. (Warning: She does occasionally ramble on and on about stupid college football, but then, everyone has their faults.)

I love all the rest of you, but I'm already pretty darned close to exhaustion and putting in links is a tedious process for this ever groovy, but never geeky ole gal. So, for the rest of you:

(((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))

(Don't worry, you can't get lice over the the internet!)

Those of you who have won this illustrious Christmassy award of bloggity goodness can find the button code for your blog HERE. Now you generous souls can pass the joy on to others!

EDIT (Because Groovy can't leave well enough alone!)
*******************

I just read this on the Harvard U website and almost spit my coffee on my clean keyboard:

Washing the hair each day may dislodge a few active lice; the remaining lice and eggs will be unaffected (but clean).
