A Hot Topic

Well, it's supposed to be a hot topic, but sometimes... Oh, you'll just have to wait and see.

For the past year, The BestHubbyEver has had a bee in his bonnet about rising fuel prices. We have a large house heated by an oil powered hot-air furnace. It's been getting plum painful to see the bill after the oil man comes to fill up our tank. Oy!

Accordingly, he (That would be the BHE, not the oil man) has been looking into alternative heat sources. You know - wood stoves, propane heaters, pellet stoves, Amish fireplace thingies, or insane amounts of aerobic exercise.

He discussed all of them with me and I smiled and nodded politely. He is not an impulsive man, so I knew a decision was going to take a while. In the meantime we could go on as we have been with me sneaking over to bump up the thermostat every time his back was turned.

A wife who's shivering in a parka in her own living room WILL do what she must to survive!

Anyhoo, he finally decided that a pellet stove was what we needed. He had me look them up online and compare their prices and ratings. He talked to everyone he knew who had one - they all love theirs - and he measured over and over again to figure out the best place to install it. Finally, he called a few stove shops and had them come out to give us estimates.

The short story is that we have had a pellet stove in our kitchen since November

ARG! We interrupt this blog post to report another strong evidence of Groovy's mediocrity at blogging. She can upload pics. But can she arrange them and put them where she wants them in the post? NOOOOOOOOOOO!

Henceforth, the following pictures are A. out of order and B. not where I want them in the post. Just use your imagination to fix it all, K?

**************************************************************************
Here is my sad, lonely, and COLD desk waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over on the far wall of the living room where it is always chilly. (Oh the irony! See all the blankets on the recliner??!!)

This is the only doorway opening in the-wall-that-cannot-be-removed. That round, brown hooey in the wall is the fan that presumably blows the kitchen warmth into the living room and bedrooms.

Here's one of the cozy spots the BHE set up. It's a lovely place to read or visit with friends.

And here's our pellet stove corner, complete with yet another comfy chair.

This is the model we own -a Napolean NPS 45.

And here is where I get to tell you how much I love/hate it.

First of all, after MUCH debate, we decided to install the stove in the corner of the kitchen, blowing inward to the rest of the house. I was a little worried about placing it there because there is a wall between the kitchen and the rest of the house. I was concerned that the heat might stay all bottled up in the kitchen and wouldn't make it adequately into the rest of the house, even though we did aim the blower toward the doorway. When I finally realized that the BHE meant for the stove to be our ONLY heat source (I was under the insane delusion that we still might use the furnace on occasion - you know, if we got chilly or something) I begged him to tear the dividing wall down completely.

Alas, it is a load bearing wall. Curses, foiled again!

Instead of tearing the wall down, we did some ventilation experiments. The final result was a fan near the ceiling that blows from the kitchen into the living room, and a cold air return vent near the floor.

The BHE moved some cozy chairs into the kitchen and then *gasp* moved my desk into the living room (It WAS in the kitchen. It's been there for the past 10+ years!) and we were in business.

Here's what I love about the pellet stove:

1. We finally have a warm spot that we can go to if we're chilly. (Not so fun with a hot air vent...)

2. I can hang wet clothes, etc near the stove to dry quickly.

3. I finally have a warm place to raise bread, culture yogurt, or start sourdough!

4. The flame is cheerful and cozy.

5. We all tend to hang out together in the kitchen/dining area instead of going our separate ways in other parts of the house.

6. The oil furnace is still functional so I can use it to fill in the heating gaps. Or at least, I can if the BHE is not here.

*gasp* Did I just say that?????????

And now, the reasons I Hate/Loathe our new pellet stove:

1. The reason we all tend to hang out together in the kitchen/dining area is because the rest of the house is COLD. ie. In spite of our best efforts, the kitchen area is significantly warmer than the rest of the house! Including bathrooms! *shiver* And bedrooms! *shiver* And the living room where my desk is! *shiver*

NOTE: It is very hard to type with numb hands and it is very difficult to enjoy watching movies together when we're SHIVERING! (We have no tv. Movies are seen on the iMac or they aren't seen at all.)

I'm just sayin'...

2. The pellet stove is high maintenance. We have to brush out the ash (particularly from the burn pot) and clean the glass in the door daily. This necessitates shutting the stove down, opening it up and making a mess. Every Day.

It has to be vacuumed weekly - either with a special ash vacuum or with a shop vac with special filter that will keep the ask from being regurgitated back into the air.

40 pound bags of pellets have to be carried up the stairs from the garage once or twice a day (depending on how many pellets we've been burning).

3. Like wood stoves, pellet stoves apparently attract dust. I have dust webs everywhere - from the ceilings, in the corners, on the floor. I can dust a room and then next day it is coated again. Blech!

NOTE: Max Tuttle, our chief dustbunny, loves this aspect of pellet stove ownership.

4. The pellet stove has an electric auger and blower. If the power goes out we will have no heat at all.

5. Hmmmm, I don't guess there actually IS a 5. I thought there would be because my feelings toward the pellet stove are much more negative than positive. (It doesn't show, does it?) I guess God is reminding me to be more thankful for #'s 1-6 in the "love it" department.

Ok, so there you have it. Now if you'll excuse me, it's time to bring up another bag of pellets...

Mercy!

Update:

The Bad News: I now have a sore throat. Uh-oh!

The Good News: I had a blast working with the kids at 4-H breaking ground and planting pumpkin seedlings. Earlybird had set her chicken coop over the plot we were going to dig so their droppings would kill the grass. Have you ever smelled chicken poop?

Ugh!!!!!!

Which brings me to...

The Funny News: Naturally, we got chicken doo-doo on our shoes, and our hands and, well, who knows where else. Couple that with a considerable sweat-inducing rise in temperature and I was seriously stinky.

SERIOUSLY stinky. So stinky that we are all taking showers BEFORE camping.

I had errands to run and almost couldn't stand to be with myself and that lovely odor. I said, "Good grief! I think chicken poo is almost as bad as hog poo. It reeks!"

Girly-Girl responded, "Yeah, kinda makes you glad you're not a chicken - imagine living with that smell all the time! Hey...Now there's something to be thankful for!!"

:-D

So...as you read my whiny post, keep in mind that my thankfulness factor is on the rise, sore throat notwithstanding!

Ok Folks. I am SO not in good writing form. If I was I would not have written that last sentence.

I am trying to write about the Trek on my GroovyTrekkers blog, but it is SLOW going! I've only had three days home and now we're off to camp in rain (forcasted) and mud ( a definite reality after the past 10 days of almost constant rain) and mosquitoes (always present at the fairgrounds we'll be at).

Though I confess, I think I see some sunshine trying to break through the fog outside right now.

COME ON, MR. SUNSHINE!!!!

*sigh*

These whole 3 days we've been home, I've been in a very uncharacteristic funk. Why? Well...

1. Constant rain and grey skies (including constant downpour on the first day - 65 miles - of the Trek). I managed "cheerful" for several days, but my inner sunshine is fading.

2. I only rode 81 miles (out of 180) of the bike ride due to some strained ligaments in my leg.

- Year One: I didn't ride at all because I injured my achilles tendon. I just raised the money and then volunteered all weekend.

- Year Two: I rode the first two days and was miserable because I did not train effectively. I spent the last day volunteering with my team.

- This Year: I trained REALLY well and really hard. I was truly ready - both physically and mentally. I wanted that stupid medal SO BAD. (Dang, now I'm crying again...). My ride on the first day was fabulous - even if it was raining. I was one of the few riders that wasn't cold and miserable. I had NO probems at all with the dreaded giant hill of doom. I was having FUN! Then, about 53 miles into the ride, I started feeling a twinge in my left leg. A few miles later it had progressed to an ache. By the end of the ride it was genuinely painful. I was walking with a decided limp and stairs/inclines were agony. I iced it and rested it and took as much ibuprofen as was prudent and hoped for the best.

It still ached the next morning. I had feeling I wasn't going to make it the whole day, so I warned Ken. But I was still praying for a sudden "recovery". No such blessing - I made it 16 miles and had to pull off the road and flag a "SAG" vehicle to pick me up. The Trek was over for me. I did my best to keep a good attitude and "look on the bright side", but I fell apart on Monday and cried all day and I've been tearing up at the drop of a hat ever since.

I know I'm not a "failure" and all that - yadda, yadda, yadda - but It sure seems like every time, EVERY time I try something like this, it all falls apart. It's very discouraging.

3. I've only had 3 days home and tday we're packing and off for a weekend of fun and excitement and mud for 4-H.

4. I don't feel good - my neck glands are swollen and painful, so I'm popping vitamin C every hour or so and drinking gallons of water. This should make 4-H and camping somewhat interesting today.

5. I spent 5 hours shopping yesterday in an attempt to actually find my girlies shoes that they like, that actually fit, and that we can afford. It was exhausting!

6. In spite of all the riding I've been eating like a pig and gained back all that weight I lost. The "flat belly" is no more! And there's no way I'm going to try to diet again right now - not until after our drive out to visit Funsocksgirl and J-man next week.

******************************************

OK...I'm done whining for now. I guess we all need the occasional pity party. Thanks for putting up with mine! I will do my best to get all my Trek entries done before our trip to NY.

Wait...yes...that IS sunshine out there! Maybe things are starting to look up!

Procrastination Perpetuality

Groovy sits down to work on her novel.

Somehow the email program opens instead.

Hello, Sally. Pray for Kit. Gets directed to Xanga.com. Reads Blogger comments. OH a Facebook message!

Speaking of Facebook...plays Scrabulous with Funsocksgirl, returns a message to Bev, thinks up a clever (cough) new note for the top of Groovy's page.

Speaking of Blogger...Came here and started randomly surfing from blog to blog. Groovy reminded herself to not waste time leaving comments. She left comments anyway. Now she feels guilty because she didn't go to everyone's blog and leave comments.

Time for a snack. A low-carb snack for a low energy day. Groovy needs to kick the sugar habit before she bursts out at the seams. Literally.

Throw some clothes in the washer.

Come upstairs and catch a teddy bear trying to steal Silly-Head's hot chocolate: (Waiting for Blogger to upload the picture...)

Sit down to write. Jason and his mom make cookies together after a poignant moment. Except that it's NOT poignant, it's lame. Groovy grumbles at her ineptness and opens Safari.

Time to change to that new Time Warner email address before all Groovy's internet goodies get tossed out into the internetherworld. Groovy downloads and form fills and then realizes she doesn't have the account number. This is becasue even though she pretends to be Robert (Hello, Robert!), she is not. She is clueless Groovy. She does the techy stuff (double cough with a choke thrown in for good measure) but Robert gets the bills next door.

Robert aka Grampy can't find the account number 'cause Grammy is the one who pays and files the bills. Email changes are tabled until she returns from her errand running.

Back to the novel. Wait...did the washer just finish? Groovy switches loads around and says "Here, here!" for James Dobson as he defends himself against evil liberal slanderers.

Gotta feed the girls. Looks at pictures of the girls on the computer. Finds this cute one and decides she needs to post it on her blog: (Waits and WAITS for stupid picture to upload)

Brrrriiiiinnnng. Gotta talk to Gramma J. She's depressed and not feeling well so Groovy talks a looooong time.

Back to Jason. Roadblock. Stupid fingers keep typing incorehent wrods. Too much time retyping. Fixing. Mending. Grousing.

Groovy decides to fill out an insurance mandated health form online that guarantees a $25 gift certificate. The site is down.

Groovy has a headache.

Needs to teach school. Yep.

Opens Blogger and strats typing. Stupid fingers!

Now Groovy is banging her head on the desk because her verb tenses in this post are all mixed up, but she's too distracted to fix them. Stupid verb tenses!

Groovy gets chastised by small fry for using the "S" word so many times in this post. Stupid "S" word!

Gotta wash another load...

Groovy decides in the midst of her dark mood to be generous. Sign up for this Groovy Giveaway. If you win, Groovy will also send you chocolate. Dark, Milk, AND White. This, even though she steadfastly maintains that chocolate and white cannot coexist.

And now Groovy, who should be teaching school and writing a brilliant novel is wondering how her birthday post disappeared. Where did it go?
