For Your Enlightenment

One has to wonder at the ambiguous nature of this title on the cover of Discipleship Journal (May/June 2007):

"How to Love Annoying People".

I know I certainly love to annoy people, but I never dreamed a national mag would try to bring others to my level of appreciation for the art.

This pic is for Marianne and her murder mystery. For the rest of you...any idea what it is?

The Groovy senoritas:

Who made groovy Ojos de Dios:

And ate groovy Mexican foods:

The tortillas just barely passed muster (our first try, ya know?) But the Polvorones (Mexican sugar cookies) were easy and astoundingly good! You will want to try them:

Polvorones (Mexican Sugar Cookies)

1 cup butter, room temp.

3/4 cup sugar

1/2 tsp cinnamon

2 cups flour

Cream the butter and sugar and cinnamon.

Add the flour 1/2 cup at a time.

Use heaping teaspoon to make balls.

Roll or dip in cinnamon and sugar.

Bake on ungreased cookie sheets at 300ºF for 25 minutes.

Remove immediately to cooling racks.

Ditch the diet and chow down!

Saturday, Gram had to take Gramp to the ER because he was "puffy". Puffy is not good when you have chronic heart failure. They tried this and that and decided to admit him because his kidneys weren't "functioning optimally". Naturally, they started changing all his meds.

Gram and Gramp always like to keep us FULLY informed on his health issues...

Here are two actual conversations that took place in our home yesterday:

Mulletman: (On the phone) Hi Dad! I'm gonna come out and visit for a while. Can I bring you a snack or something?

Gramp: Immodium! Bring me Immodium!

Mulletman: Immodium? That's not much of a snack...

Gramp: Whatever they're doing to me has given me diarrhea. I have diarrhea! I NEED Immodium!

Mulletman: Strawberry or chocolate?

Gramp: Huh?

Mulletman: Dad, if you have diarrhea, you need to tell your nurse. I can't smuggle you drugs from outside without telling them. They're trying to straighten out your meds, remember? If I throw something else into the mix, it might make your kidneys worse.

Gramp: OK. Bring me a Snicker's ice cream bar instead.

Later that same afternoon...

Groovy: Hey Mom, I'm making pizza. You wanna eat with us?

Gram: No. I'm going to pick up some Applebee's for Dad and have dinner with him.

Groovy: OK

Gram: I hope he can actually eat it. He has diarrhea, you know. (Thinks a moment) Does Mulletman know that his father has diarrhea?

Groovy: (sighing) Yes, Mom. He knows. The whole family knows. (Groovy makes a mental note to email her grown children and contact the prayer chain re: Gramp's latest case of "the runs".)

And now you all know too.

Wanna hear about his gout?

**********************************************************
The American Lung Association needs your money. Really. They do.

Did you know that, "In 2003, 63,241 people died of pneumonia"? (LungUSA.Org) The ALA is the leading force in developing vaccinations against viral pneumonia and in finding effective treatments for those who contract the infection.

That's why I'm trying to raise money for them via the Trek Across Maine.

I have a blog about it now - see it in my side bar?

And you can donate online by clicking the donation links on the sidebar.

I sure enjoyed my visit to your blog today. this is my first time here, I'll be back.

Wow... maybe Gram and Gramps would like to get together with my Gram. Whatever happened to older people just playing cards and watching Jeopordy. Instead they get together, sip Immodium, eat salitines and talk about poop and whose obituary was in the paper that day.

I hope that when I am older the only time I talk about poop is if I went skydiving and it scared the crap out of me.

well Groovy... gotta go teach my little monkey. We are learining about rain today as part of our unit on Spring. I totally forgot about Cinco de Mayo... gotta try the cookie recipe.

I don't know what the object is.

I love your humor Groovy. To me real life is always the funniest thing anyway.

Thanks for your comment on my making Friends blog. Yes, I'm glad we're friends and I don't remember who found whom either but I'm glad we did. Have you ever read the item I have posted on my side bar about people God brings into your life? If not, read it. It's the truth. Have a grand day and leave the immodium at home. hehe

I can't use the weapon if I don't know what it is... The handle is strange -- like it's not meant to be held. And the serrated edges aren't very sharp... Hmmm....

I'm at a loss. We only have one more death coming up, so spill it!

:-)

I thought I would annoy you again with another comment - the weapon - I believe it is a knife to gut a deer with. I'm a Mainer now, I ought to know.

You ought to...but you don't!

I'm trying to think of what that object is but instead my mind keeps wandering around to the fact that Gramps has the runs! lol Sheesh! That's just as bad as going shopping with my mom and her saying out loud in the store...I've gotta find a bathroom, I think I have diarrhea!!! Or...whew, I just made it, almost missed the toilet! Groan! lol

HOpe your cold is better!

My MIL has that same problem and shares it with everyone whenever they call. It reminds me that when you're two and when you're 88, it's all about the potty!

What a beautiful senorita!

Poor Gramps! I'm not sure that Snickers Ice Cream will actually help him...but it is the next best thing to Immodium! ;)

OK, you went all out for Cinco de Mayo...not fair! We were lucky to throw a couple of tortillas on the pan and call it good this year!

Seriously...love the Ojos de Dios and the girls look so pretty all decked out!
Mucho Gusto! :) (That's Spanish, right?)

You sucked me in with the mystery object -- it looks like a sturdier version of my shrimp deveiner. Does it have anything to do with crabs or lobster?

Karen Putz said...

Awww, the girls look so cute! Hope their gramps gets well and the runs go away. :)

Have no idea what that knife is but I remember my grandma had one. I believe she skinned her chickens with it.

Groovy - wanted to say thank you for telling me about Billy Mac on your blog and leaving a link. I wouldn't have known about the critique if you hadn't and it was such fun for me to hear what a true outsider had to say. Thanks!

Love your pictures! You really lived it up on Cinco de Mayo, eh?

That thing at the top looks like a bow knife. Or something.

Thanks for your funny comments on my blog about when people know you and you don't know them!

I really got a chuckle about that conversation! LOL! The girls look oh so lovely and so do all the things you made!

Love the pictures, and I can't wait to try the recipe.

As for the mystery object, it looks like some kind of curry(?) comb you use to groom animals. It also looks like it would hurt a bit if used as a weapon.
